First Midtem: Task 2: Moving onto Swales

Swales' Moves on a Small-Scale Study

The revised Create a Research Space (CARS) model developed by Swales (1990) states that article introductions can be written by following specific organisational patterns. These organisational patterns are divided into moves named establishing a territory, establishing a niche and occupying the niche. It can be said that these moves start from a declining rhetorical effort to weakening knowledge claims and finish increasing explicitness on the topic(s) the writer is going to develop.

The research paper A Small-scale Study of Primary School English Language Teachers' Classroom Activities and Problems by Arikan (2011) contains the three moves which can be easily identified. In paragraph one, the author claims centrality and makes topic generalisations on the issue he wants to develop in his paper by explaining the recent changes in Turkey's education policies and how those changes have been received. This way, steps one and two of the first move are fulfilled. However, even though Arikan claims it to be a research study about primary schools, the first paragraph contains information about pre-school institutions, which may be misleading as it is not related to the main topic. It would have probably been more suitable to find information about primary schools to support the importance the writer was trying to give to the topic.

The third step of Swales´ first move is accomplished in the second paragraph, where the author does a brief review of items of previous research. The third paragraph executes the second move, where the author indicates a gap in the existent research of the subject matter, claiming that English language teaching to young learners results problematic due to the suitability of activities and materials available for that purpose. Finally, move number three is carried out in the fourth paragraph, where the author uncovers the necessity of research about teaching English to young learners.
